The ABI Conference is a dynamic gathering created to serve a distinct group of schools. It brings together international and bilingual Christian schools across Latin America, united by a shared commitment to excellence in English-based instruction. Many of these schools are also ACSI-accredited. Accredited schools in the United States are warmly invited to connect with their peers in the southern hemisphere—and may discover new inspiration and meaningful partnerships through this unique event.

ACSI REFUND POLICY: Except in cases of medical emergency, urgent family emergency, school crisis there will be no refunds for pre-registered events. If you or a pre-registered member/delegate from your school is unable to attend an event, you are encouraged to send a substitute, such as a board member, other staff member, or an interested parent. Jonathan Eckert, Ed.D., is the Lynda and Robert Copple Chair for Christians in School Leadership and Professor of Educational Leadership at Baylor University. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Baylor Center for School Leadership. He taught intermediate and middle grade students for 12 years. After completing his doctorate at Vanderbilt University, he served at the U.S. Department of Education in both the Bush and Obama administrations on teaching quality issues. He was a professor at Wheaton College for ten years where he prepared pre-service teachers. He has won several teaching awards in higher education, has spoken to thousands of educators on four continents, and is the author of multiple books including Just Teaching, Future Ready, Catalytic Improvement Communities, Leading Together, The Novice Advantage, as well numerous other articles and books.

With over 26 years of experience in Christian education, Emily Pigott serves as the VP of Educational Resources & Student Programs at ACSI. Passionate about guiding school leaders, educators, and students worldwide, she believes today's generation has the God-given potential to impact culture for Jesus. Emily is committed to equipping educators and student leaders with strategies that resonate with today's youth, inspiring them to own their education, leadership journey, and future for God's glory.

Emily has traveled globally to train and equip others in biblical leadership, character development, and transformative education. She holds a Master of Education from Southeastern University and co-authored The School of Leadership Curriculum. Married to Gene for over 31 years, Emily is a proud mother of two sons, Joshua and Jacob, and continues to inspire Christian educators to make an eternal impact, one student at a time.

Joy over Happiness

Pursuing happiness is making our students miserable. Happiness is pursued, circumstantial, self-focused, and withers in adversity. Joy is the overflow of enduring love and gratitude for others and effervesces through struggle. Because learning is productive struggle, we need to reframe adversity as a vehicle for joy because the depth of our struggle determines the peak of our joy. Joy is not the freedom from struggle, joy is the fuel to struggle well. In this interactive keynote, we will explore ways to invite students into struggle and joy.

Collective Leadership for Gritty Optimism

Great educators believe students can become more of who they are created to be based on evidence and experience. This moves beyond naïve optimism to gritty optimism. We do that work best when we do that work with other who believe that students are image-bearers. Gritty optimism can be measured through collective leadership and collective efficacy, which improves school climate and teacher retention. In this interactive keynote, we will explore how to work more effectively with others to develop the gritty optimism that leads to thriving learning communities.

Feedback, Engagement and Well-being (F.E.W.): What Research Shows 

Presenter: Jon Eckert

Teaching is about three things: feedback, engagement, and well-being (F.E.W.). We do these FEW things not for some students, or even all students, but for each student. We will look at data from all over the world including any data from schools who are attending if they would like students to complete surveys on their perceptions of FEW. We will discuss practical implications for improving outcomes for students based on FEW.

Lisa is ACSI’s Higher Education Accredited Programs (HEAP) Field Director; Dean, College of Education; Associate Professor of Education at Southeastern University. Over 20 years of experience as a classroom teacher, principal, international school superintendent in Japan, and university professor. Passionate about education and missions, she brings expertise in leadership, professional development, and cross-cultural collaboration. Her research and training focus on servant leadership, discipleship, and organizational growth. Dr. Coscia has equipped educators worldwide and serves on international accreditation teams. She currently supports teacher preparation at the university level and leads initiatives for continuous improvement in education. Outside of work, she enjoys travel, strong coffee, running, and gardening. 
Building Higher Financial Trust (include Self Fraud Risk Assessment) - How to Conduct Your Own Internal Financial Audit

Founder of CAST (Christ-centered Administrative Services Team), Daniel Hylden brings decades of experience in financial accountability and missions. Holding a B.S. in Agricultural Economics from North Dakota State University and an MBA from Liberty University, he also serves as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE). Daniel spent over 20 years as an International Auditor with the International Mission Board, primarily in Africa, where he helped develop financial systems and supported church planting efforts. In 2016, he founded CAST to help ministries build trust and transparency through sound financial practices.

Before this, she served as Director of Professional Development for ACSI Latin America for 10 years, where she provided oversight to academic programs and teacher training initiatives across the region. Sareth holds a degree with a specialization in English Language Teaching from the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (UVG), where she also is a faculty member at the School of Education ELT program.
Unstringing the Bow

Presenter: Tim Shuman

In this reflective session, Tim Shuman shares his personal journey through leadership fatigue and recovery. Drawing from his experience as a former international school head, he offers practical strategies to help educators and leaders recognize signs of burnout, restore balance, and rediscover joy in their calling. Participants will explore rhythms of rest, the value of friendship, and sustainable practices for long-term flourishing in ministry.

Tim Shuman serves as the Senior Director for International Schools at the 91ºÚÁÏÍø (ACSI). Before ACSI, he held various roles at Black Forest Academy in Germany, including Head of School. Tim is passionate about supporting global Christian educators and fostering leadership development. Through his initiative, Unstringing the Bow, he encourages leaders to find sustainable rhythms of rest and renewal. Tim is also an artist who finds balance through drawing and painting, reflecting his belief in the importance of creative outlets for personal well-being.

Her extensive work includes authoring several influential books, such as Teaching English in Missions, Language Learning in Ministry, and What School Leaders Need to Know About English Learners. As the Country Director for Missionary Ventures International (MVI), he leads initiatives focused on developing Christian leadership across all sectors of Nicaraguan society. Eric and his wife, Marilyn, are also active board members of Nicaragua Christian Academy (NCA), where he has contributed to staff development and strategic planning. Through his roles with MVI and NCA, Eric continues to empower local leaders and educators, fostering a legacy of holistic development and spiritual growth in Nicaragua. Seasoned TESOL Educator, Author, and Consultant With Over 35 Years of Global Experience

 

Dr. Jan Edwards Dormer is a seasoned TESOL educator, author, and consultant with over 35 years of global experience. She has taught English to learners of all ages in diverse contexts, including Brazil, Indonesia, and Kenya. Currently, she serves as Director and Professor of TESOL at Taylor University in Indiana, USA. Dr. Dormer holds an Ed.D. in Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning from the University of Toronto, an M.A. in TESOL from Ball State University, and a B.A. in Elementary Education from Asbury College. Her extensive work includes authoring several influential books, such as Teaching English in Missions, Language Learning in Ministry, and What School Leaders Need to Know About English Learners. In 2023, she was honored with the Earl Stevick Award for outstanding Christian TESOL professionals. Dr. Dormer is passionate about equipping educators to integrate faith and language instruction, fostering inclusive classrooms that reflect Christ-centered values.

With over 26 years of experience in Christian education, Emily Pigott serves as the VP of Educational Resources & Student Programs at ACSI. Passionate about guiding school leaders, educators, and students worldwide, she believes today's generation has the God-given potential to impact culture for Jesus. Emily is committed to equipping educators and student leaders with strategies that resonate with today's youth, inspiring them to own their education, leadership journey, and future for God's glory.

Emily has traveled globally to train and equip others in biblical leadership, character development, and transformative education. She holds a Master of Education from Southeastern University and co-authored The School of Leadership Curriculum. Married to Gene for over 31 years, Emily is a proud mother of two sons, Joshua and Jacob, and continues to inspire Christian educators to make an eternal impact, one student at a time.

Driving Directions from Santo Domingo International Airport (SDQ) to Crowne Plaza Hotel Santo Domingo:

The distance from Santo Domingo International Airport (Las Américas International Airport - SDQ) to Crowne Plaza Hotel Santo Domingo is approximately 32 kilometers (20 miles). Depending on traffic conditions, the journey typically takes 30 to 40 minutes by car. 

 

Taxi
  1. Exit the Arrival Terminal: Once you clear customs and collect your luggage, head to the taxi stand located just outside the terminal. 

     

  2. Official Taxi Services: Look for official airport taxis with clear signage and uniformed drivers. They are reliable and safe. 

 

  1. Tell the Driver Your Destination: Inform the driver you are going to "Crowne Plaza Hotel Santo Domingo," located on George Washington Avenue (also known as the Malecón). 

 

  1. Travel Time: The ride takes approximately 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic. 

 

  1. Cost: The taxi fare is approximately $35–$40 USD. Confirm the price with the driver before starting your trip.

Does my school need to be Accredited, Bilingual, and International to attend the ABI Conference? 

No, your school can have one or more of these three characteristics. The event will be conducted in English. 

Does the hotel where the event will take place offer special rates for attendees?
Yes, the Crowne Plaza Hotel offers a participants
Who can attend the event? 
The event is intended for teachers, school directors, owners, coordinators, leaders, and members of educational leadership teams. 
Are there group discounts for the event? 
Yes. Please check the event website under the "Registration Fees" section for full details. 
What topics will be covered?
We encourage you to review the list of keynote speakers, focus session leaders, conference themes, and session topics on the event website. 
Can I cancel or transfer my registration?
  • If you or a registered representative from your school cannot attend ABI, please inform the registration coordinators as soon as possible. You may transfer your payment and reserved spot to someone else by notifying us of the change. 
  • Except in cases of medical emergencies, urgent family emergencies, or school crises, refunds will not be issued for pre-registered events. 
  • If a refund is approved, a $50 service fee per registrant will be deducted from the refund amount.
