PhD-Community Initiative capstone event
4:30 PM – 6:30 PM
The School of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs is pleased to invite the broader Queen’s and Kingston community to the PhD-Community Initiative (PhD-CI) Reception. The PhD-CI is an experiential learning program that brings together interdisciplinary teams of graduate students with organizations in the local community to address an issue of importance.
This year, teams partnered with KFL&A Public Health, Kingston Economic Development Corporation, the City of Kingston, and the Community Foundation for Kingston and Area. Students from across Arts and Science, Engineering and Applied Science, Health Sciences, and Education came together to tackle issues related to:
- the impact of public health communications to prevent invasive meningococcal disease,
- how municipalities can better engage informal community leaders to encourage civic engagement,
- support for seniors who seek to realize entrepreneurial ambitions after retirement, and
- navigation of support services that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations.
The event includes remarks from City and University officials followed by brief presentations from student teams, and a networking reception. This is a great opportunity to see how our students are having a positive impact locally, see community engagement in action, and learn how graduate students translate their skills and talent to challenges outside of academia.
The event is free, and all are welcome!
